James Coleman

I found this artist interesting as he is Irish and has studied art and design in Dublin. He produced these photographs in (1998-1999) in a similar method that we did for our elective which consisted of still images playing together in a form of video with a voice over narrative. The photographic images document a mise en scène that takes place in and around the rehearsal hall of a community school, where a group of young actors and dancers re-enact dance routines and dramatized scenes for a school project in stages of rehearsal. James Coleman’s art is literally histrionic: in other words, attuned to the mechanics and meaning of staged presence, a matter of theatrical projection and perspective on the part of actor and audience alike. It is almost like he wants you the onlooker to engage in this performance.
